With neither team ranked in the top-25, the Georgia-Tennessee game this past Saturday was not as big of an attraction as it has been in the past, not even getting a mention on ESPN’s SportsCenter. However, for the Calhoun faithful, there might not have been a bigger game.

The match-up between two SEC powerhouses, though maybe not this season, featured five former Calhoun High School football players.

On the Georgia sideline were receiver Kris Durham, long snapper Ty Frix, and redshirt receiver Rhett McGowan. On the Tennessee sideline were receiver Da’Rick Rogers and redshirt QB Nash Nance.

“Growing up in Calhoun you never really heard of a lot of people going into big time college football but now we have a lot of guys playing Division-I football,” said Durham, the elder statesman of the group. “Coach Lamb and his staff do a great job of preparing players and I have nothing but great things to say about them.”

Durham was a big factor for the Bulldogs earlier this season with top receiver A.J. Green serving a suspension. With Green back his playing time has stayed the same but his stats have dropped. However, Durham is happy to have Green back and with the role with the team this season.

“I was blessed with opportunist and I just tried to take advantage of them,” he said. “To have him back is a blessing for our entire team.”

Durham had one reception for 17 yards against Tennessee.

Frix also received lots of playing time and has teamed up with star kicker Blair Walsh to make a great duo this season. Against the Vols he took part in a successful 42 yard field goal, and was also part of five extra point plays and four punts. He is the team’s starting long snapper.

For Tennessee, Rogers had one reception for minus-three yards. The Vols’ freshman has routinely played in one or two snaps per game this season as he gets acquainted with the college game.

All five players met briefly after the game and exchanged pleasantries.

ProudCalhounAlum: Seriously?

On another note... Good job, Calhoun Times, on the spotlight. It's important to support our children and youth in their positive, extracurricular activities--during and after their secondary education.

It would be great to spotlight all the players from Calhoun and Gordon County that go on to play college sports. I'm sure the Calhoun Times will attempt to get information but I'm sure they'd also like for parents to snap a photo and provide information to the paper to be included. It's unrealistic to think that the Times' slim staff would be able to be everywhere. Thanks Calhoun Times for printing the stories and pictures that are submitted by the community.

Will the same coverage be given at the Georgia Tech Georgia game when 5 CHS players again "take the field?" I doubt it.

And people wonder why parents want to send their kids to the City schools.
