A local Civil War reenactment group from Resaca is selling raffle tickets in hopes of purchasing a veteran’s monument at Fort Wayne that will commemorate Resaca’s fallen soldiers.

The 28th of Georgia Company G/123 New York reenacters are selling single raffle tickets for $2 or three tickets for $5 and will auction off a $75 Wal-Mart and Honeybaked Ham gift card package through the month of October. The winner of the raffle drawing will be announced on Nov. 1.

Dennis Melville, organizer of the Resaca veteran’s monument trust fund raffle, said he came up with the idea be-cause the group reenacts scenes of the actual soldiers who served in the 28th Company G. Freeman Guards from the city of Resaca.

“We thought as a group it would be a nice thing to have something representing Gordon County that shows the sacrifices the men made back then,” Melville said.

The 28th of Georgia Company reenactment group has traveled to many towns and Melville said he began noticing many memorial stones and thought it would be nice to incorporate this at Ft. Wayne in Resaca.

Melville estimates that the Veterans memorial monument will cost anywhere from $10,000 to $12,000 and said the group plans on hosting more fundraisers to follow the raffle.

“It’s very important to remember our past and the sacrifices the forefathers gave. We can’t move forward until we learn about our past,” he said.

The six-foot by four-foot monument will display the Georgia state logo on the front and the Confederate state seal on the back, along with the names of the battles, as well as the names of the soldiers somewhere on the monument.

It would be displayed at the Fort Wayne Park in Resaca.

Anyone wishing to make a donation by check can write checks to the 28th Ga. Company G. monument fund. Email dj28thga@yahoo.com to purchase a raffle ticket.

Tickets are now available for purchase at Resaca city hall, Melville said.
