Northbound traffic on Interstate 75 in Gordon County was at a virtual standstill Wednesday from early morning until evening after a tractor-trailer truck collided with another large truck near mile marker 316.

According to Allison Hodge, a public affairs representative from the Georgia State Patrol office, at approxi-mately 7:14 a.m., one of the tractor trailer drivers fell asleep at the wheel and slammed into the other tractor trailer, which was parked on the shoulder of the road. The second driver had previously pulled over to sleep, she said.

The trailer of the woodchip truck turned over on its side, according to Hodges, but there were no serious injuries reported.

As Georgia State Patrol officers investigated the accident midmorning, the truck hauling beer was resting against the metal median rail, and boxes of beer were scattered around the cab.

The woodchip trailer rested on the grass on the right side of the northbound lanes.

Two lanes were reopened at 11 a.m., but the roadway was not fully cleared until after 6 p.m.

The delay caused congestion on Highway 41 and other major routes through Calhoun.
