Gordon County Sheriff Mitch Ralston’s Sheriff’s Auxiliary will be sponsoring a benefit raffle to help retired State Trooper Herman Scoggins raise funds for a much-needed heart transplant.

The auxillary will be raffling off a Primo charcoal grill cooker on Friday, Sept. 24, at noon during their monthly lunch at the Gordon County Sheriff’s department, and all proceeds will go directly toward Scoggins’ medical expenses.

The grill was donated to the Sheriff’s department, according to Shirley Woodall, administrative assistant to Sheriff Mitch Ralston.

“We heard about Trooper Scoggins’ illness and the sheriff thought that since it was donated to us, we could use it to help,” she said.

Although Trooper Scoggins will not be able to attend the event due to his illness, many state troopers will be there to represent their comrade.

Scoggins was a trooper with the Georgia State Patrol for 26 years, serving in Canton, Rome, and Cedartown. Just months after being promoted to post commander at his station in Cedartown, Scoggins was diagnosed with heart disease and has been in heart failure for the past 10 years.

He is now in desperate need of a heart transplant, but the cost of the surgery is very high.

Tickets are $1 each, but are limited. Tickets will be available at the Gordon County Sheriff’s department, the Georgia State Patrol Post 43 or directly from members of the Sheriff’s Auxiliary. Tickets will be available for the purchase the day of the event only if there are still tickets available, and the winner does not have to be present at the event to receive the prize.

An account has also been set up for Scoggins at the Georgia State Patrol Credit Union in Atlanta. Anyone who would like to contribute can call 404-624-7790.
