The series, named for Dalton resident Bob Davison, is designed to bring authors and lecturers to Dalton for the enjoyment and enlightenment of area citizens. In the next five months, speakers will discuss diverse topics and genres such as mystery, Southern life and culture, suspense, history, horror, fiction, and Native- American life and lore.
The programs are designed primarily for adults and young adults. Some of the talks are traditional with authors reading from their works. Other programs may delve more deeply into character creation, plot selection, motivation for writing, or into the speaker’s particular genre. Many of the authors will have a book signing following their presentation. All programs begin at 6:30 PM with a complimentary reception in the Author’s honor, courtesy of The Friends of the Dalton-Whitfield Public Library.
The series begins Thursday, August 26, when Native-American Cherokee storyteller Lloyd Arneach will present his stories in a style that is humorous, informative and extremely moving. His stories range from the "old stories" of the Cherokee to contemporary stories he has collected. An enrolled member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee, Arneach was born and reared on the Cherokee Reservation in North Carolina. He learned his first legends from two storytelling uncles on the reservation. He has traveled extensively, lecturing on Cherokee history and culture. He has told stories at the Kennedy Center, the National Folklife Festival in Washington, DC, the opening of the National Museum of the American Indian, on the Discovery Channel, and other venues throughout the US.
The Dalton-Whitfield Public Library is at the corner of Waugh and Cappes Streets in Dalton, GA. Admission to the Author Series events is free; donations are gratefully accepted.
