A suspicious package that shut down operations at the Calhoun Post Office Thursday afternoon turned out to be empty, according to Calhoun Police Chief Garry Moss.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation and Gordon County Emergency Management Agency closed off Court Street from the post office to the court house and King Street earlier, but both roads are now open again.

Claude Sisson, Calhoun postmaster, said earlier in the afternoon that he didn't feel the package left at in the lobby was threatening, but he wanted to exercise caution, and have the package X-rayed.

"Someone left a package in the lobby and a customer reported it to us. It's not a bomb, according to the dog, but we are going to x-ray it to be sure," said Sisson.

A man set a box in a corner and then quickly left, said Lt. Tony Pyle with the Calhoun Police Department.

A bomb-sniffing dog was called to the scene, Pyle added.

“Anytime we have something like this, for obvious reasons, it’s better to let the dog check it out as opposed to just grabbing it,” he said

This has happened before when people didn't know what to do with a package from a delivery service, said Sisson.

The police department received the call around noon, and customers and employees were evacuated from the post office.

@gigglingcat - I would argue that there is evidence to support that the deaths caused by Stalin were in part the result of atheism, but I think we could more easily agree that the deaths he caused were not in the name of God. Which is the point I was trying to make. I hold the same position in regards to Hitler, but again can we agree that the deaths he caused were not in the name of God? Yes the figure of 17 millions includes those killed during the 30 year war by people who professed to be Christians. It also includes other acts of Christiandom such as the crusades.

@Welltraveled - Of course I referenced "biased sources" to make my point. Please allow me to ask you a few questions. In regards to Christ is the Bible a biased source? Of course it is a biased source. Does that make its content any less true? Of course not! Truth is always biased. Truth is always intolerant. Two plus two equals four. That is a true statement. That statement is biased and intolerant of all numbers except the number four. It will always equal four regardless of personal opinion. Since many of your comments on the boards come off as mean spirited or rude I was a little surprised by your profession of faith in Christ. Maybe I misunderstood some of your comments or maybe you need to reconsider your comments.

Joe,

As an EDUCATED and OPEN MINDED Christian, let me just point out that; everything you "referenced" are biased sources. Please, do some real research, other that what the preacher and Christian books tell you. You will find that most of your "facts" are not accurate. Don't give us all a bad name by making uneducated comments, please.

Stalin and his deeds were not a result of atheism, simply a bid for total power.

Hitler, it is argued was neither Christian, nor atheist. He was supported by the Catholic Church. His closest followers were full of people (like himself) extolling the most absurd religious ideas and concepts imaginable.

What about the 30 Year War? The conflict between Catholics & Protestants across Europe, resulting in several million deaths?

Gotta love how people just yank "facts" and numbers outta thin air to support a position.

@Stupidisthenormhere

1. The Biblical account of the flood was not stolen from anyone, period. Anyone that wants to can go to the following link for an almost endless explanation of the facts. It even points out that most pro historians don't share your opinion. http://bibleapologetics.wordpress.com/the-genesis-flood-14/

2. Christians are percecuted worldwide. That is an undisputable fact. According to Barrett and Johnson's, "Top 24 Causes of Christian Deaths", martydom is number 20. Death by car wreck is number 21. What does that tell you?

3. You said, "they who have started more wars than any religion and murdered more people in the name of God." That lie has been told for a very long time and people such as yourself have started to believe it, but just do the math. Mao killed 72 million people, Stalin killed 40 million people, Hitler killed about 15 million people, add in about another 3 million murders by other misc. atheists and you get a total of 130 million people. Thats 130 million people killed by non believers in only one century. There have been no more than 17 million people killed in the name of Christ since the beginning of time. These numbers don't even include all the babys that have been murdered in the modern day abortion holocaust. For more specific info on this subject read the book, "What if Jesus had never been born?"

4. In regards to hate and racism. Hate and racism are not core values of Christ. If you've seen hate and racism from a follower of Christ then you've A)seen a follower that needs to repent of their sins or B) seen a false convert.

I pray that those that don't know Christ would seek to know him with an open heart and an open mind.

Hebrews 9:27 "And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment"

I see the times is deleting only selected posts again. Dirty, you are stupid and ignorant. If you choose to put your beliefs in myths and legends that were stolen from the ancient Sumerians, without credit, that is certainly your choice but you should accept the consequences of doing so. As long as you self professed "christians" act the way you do, with hate and racism, you will be judged by your actions. No doubt this one will be deleted too and the ones that attack me will stand; as normal for this newspaper. "Christians" like to act like they are persecuted and yet it is they who have started more wars than any religion and murdered more people in the name of God. Any religion is better than the one that so many profess to belong to because of the hate and racism that religion represents. Don't believe me? Read your history books, and not the psuedo history that your bible presents.

Oh and I didn't call you ignorant, stupid, you came up with that on your own. You make it way too easy to pick at you with that name. :) Christians are allowed to have a sense of humor. Lighten up a little bit. Peace.

Oh by the way your comment will probably be deleted anyway because of your "foul" language.

It's easy for the trolls to come out here because it's essentially not moderated except when the mood hits someone. It doesn't help that they throw out the Golden Rule when they have a piece of anonymity and the ability to make multiple accounts either.

But hey, they're good little christians aren't they?

Wow! I thought some of the people on the Rome News site were a little far out there in left field, but some of you guys passed them a while ago! Countrywoman, there are a lot nice people in Georgia, just apparently not that post on the Calhoun Times comment sections! Phew....I'm going to have to go take a nap now to get over all this bickering which was over something that has nothing to do with the subject of the article! Where's that commentator who is supposed to keep people on track? Guess he/she is busy deleting comments with the H word in them!

Countrywoman, not everyone is so bad, just the republicans. This bunch will attack you for saying "Have a good day." People in Georgia have become hateful and mean over the past 30 years as the state voted more and more republivan and our education system suffered because of them.
