Plans to drive children from Gordon County to the Georgia School for the Deaf in Cave Spring cleared the first hurdle Monday.

Gordon County School board members unanimously recommended providing bus transportation to hearing-impaired children for the school year at the Aug. 9 regular meeting.

In the agreement, Gordon County Schools will transport their students and the students from Calhoun City Schools to the school in Cave Spring.

Calhoun City Schools will pay Gordon County Schools a flat rate of $11,000 for the 2010-2011 school year.

A potential positive, according to Superintendent Bill McCown, is that some students stay at GSD throughout the week.

During McCown’s report on the first day of school, he mentioned enrollment is up this year in the midst of the ongoing budget crisis.

“We are staffed appropriately,” said McCown, referencing the teacher population and student situation.

As of Monday, enrollment in the county system was 6,790 students, including students in pre-K. Enrollment is only 10 students less than 2008.

In other business:

Members of the board approved a spending resolution for September during their meeting.

This was the third time the board approved this type of financial bridge. The first spending resolution for this fiscal year was approved for the month of July.

The school system receives funds on a monthly basis; the spending resolution allows the system to receive its normal allotments before the 2010-2011 budget is finalized.

The amount of money set by the spending resolution cannot exceed one-twelfth (the equivalent of one month) of last year’s budget of $56,127,077, according to Finance Director Gail Farriba.

Farriba explained to members of the board that the reason a spending resolution was approved for September was in case the board members weren’t able to approve a final budget in the month of August because the school system is waiting for final tax digest numbers from the county.

Teacher Recognitions

McCown recently honored Jane Ellen Fite and Nancy Nichols for excellence as pre-K coordinators.

“They are known across the state as those who know the answers to pre-K,” McCown said.

“We are proud to have them,” he added.

The board met behind closed doors for executive session on a legal matter. The next regular board meeting is Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. at 205 Warrior Path.

During the Monday, Aug. 9 meeting, board members:

  • approved field trip requests for Gordon Central High School’s marching band to Jacksonville, Ala. on Oct. 30 for marching band competition and to Orlando, Fla. From Dec. 26-30 to participate in the Camps Sports Bowl Halftime show.

  • announced Ashworth Middle School’s open house from 6 to 8 p.m. on Aug. 26 and Labor Day holiday on Sept. 6.

REL - Masterful obscurantism by Team Wonderland.

Answer to the interest question. You, literally.

Less is more these days. Except in one place - Team Wonderland's public sector.

Why is there not a tax digest number ready by the required time. Should someone start working on it earlier ? What has the FNG (Friendly New Guy) have to say about the digest not being prepared on time to run the schools? Is the city far behind? How did it get like this? Who will pay the interest ?

    Just questions.

Ed - "..a little homework" started this Gordon BOE venture.

Above article: "Enrollment is only 10 students less than in 2008."

"...a little homework"(source previously stated) determined the number(using old math) to be 222.

Team education in Wonderland can't add and subtract; yet, we give them our children to train.

Still nothing about: Spend less. Borrow less.

Well, if you could read, you would see that it is McCown and not McGowen or McGown. The only family I have at the county schools is a child in high school. As far as going to get a form and talk to the board, it is in the board policies that you can get a form at the office and speak to the board. If you look at some of the agendas online, you'll see under public participation where people have been on there to speak to the board. As far as borrowing, if you do not know, they have to pass a spending resolution to be able to make payroll, pay power bills, etc. until a final budget is approved. That was explained in minutes a month or so ago. Do a little homework before you speak!!!!!

Ed - In my opinion, truth should be printed at Gordon County Online and in the official county organ, aka The Calhoun Times.

Using your assumption, how does one know if it's McGowen/McGown?

"Go to the office and get a form...to talk to the board..." Nonsense.

What say you about: Spend less. Borrow less.

Suggests you are part of/family to top clutter that needs cutting.

Well, Crispy and Sugar, if you want to know the truth, go to the office and get a form to fill out to talk to the board at the next meeting and ask them for the truth yourself. Anyone can talk to the board at a meeting. That would be the SMART thing to do instead of assuming you know the truth. Because you know what assume does!

    Nuh uh… Old math: 7012 – 6790 = 222 students less; not 10.

    1)

“(Superintendent McGowen)…enrollment is up this year…” “…As of Monday, enrollment in the county system was 6,790 students… is only 10 students less than 2008.”

The Gordon County School System has a current enrollment of 7,012 as of September 2008 http://www.gordoncounty.org/Home/AboutUs/Education.aspx

    2)

"…the spending resolution allows the system to receive its normal allotments…”

Public servants: Nothing today is normal. A “spending resolution” for we commoners means borrow.

    Spend less. Borrow less.

Gordon County can clean up its education act by removing the clutter at the top.
