A Summerville man was pronounced dead on the scene of a wreck on Martha Berry Highway at 5:30 a.m. this morning after apparently striking a horse that was wandering across the highway, police said.

According to Floyd County police:

Carl Scott Pauley, 43, of Summerville was traveling South on Martha Berry Highway just North of Hwy. 156 when his 1995 Honda Civic struck a horse on the inside lane. The car veered off the highway onto the west side of the road. The horse, when struck, flipped onto the top of the car.

Pauley was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said unattended livestock is a serious problem, especially near roadways.

"We're going to do the investigation as to where the horse came from," said FCPD Cpl. Greg Beck. "Livestock has got to be in a secure area - we get calls everyday about livestock in the roadways."

Pauly was a critical care nurse in Fulton County and is survived by a wife and four children.

The investigation into the cause of the wreck and the owner of the horse is ongoing.

This should've never happened, I drove by at 5 o'clock and one Georgia State Patrol was spot lighting the horse but they needed another officer there because it kept going back and forth across the 4 lane highway and it was clear that they needed another officer there.
