Two passengers involved in the car accident at the intersection of Highway 53 and Union Grove Road July 22 were still in the hospital as of press time Tuesday.

Peggy Cochran was in stable condition at Floyd Medical Center, hospital personnel confirmed; Christine Gatlin originally admitted to Erlanger Hospital in critical condition, had stabilized.

The two-car accident was reported at 5:22 p.m. last Thursday, according to the Georgia State Patrol.

A Chevy C-10 driven by Chris Newberry of Resaca pulled onto Highway 53 in front of a Ford Mustang driven by Tommy Harrell of Lafayette. Charges to Newberry include failure to yield, said a GSP representative.

Newberry was driving two passengers — Cochran and an unnamed minor. The minor was taken to T.C. Thompson Children’s Hospital where his status could not be released.

Gatlin was Harrell’s only passenger.

Newberry reported personal injury at the accident scene and Harrell had a visible injury, according to the Georgia State Patrol.

This intersection was the subject of
  • a letter to the editor run in the June 12 edition of the Calhoun Times in which its dangerous conditions were described as “the perfect storm.”

I'm curious, how many lives and accidents have to happen along this section of Hwy 53 before someone does something about it? It took the life of my dad back in 94 so I know all to well how dangerous this section of 53 is.
