A new face will join the Gordon County Board of Education, thanks to Tuesday’s Republican primary election.

Jason Henson squeaked by Robert Wright 1,391 to 1,371 for the post 1 seat.

“I am thankful for every vote that I’ve got, and I’m thankful for all those who came out and showed their support for me,” said Henson.

“I want the best for the kids. I decided to run because I have children in the system and I have the ability to come up with ideas. I am a small business owner in Calhoun and know how to work with the local people,” he added.

Board chair William Tyner held on to the post 3 seat, defeating challenger K. Tim Pridemore 1,689 to 1,444 votes.

“First of all I knew going into this that it wasn’t going to be a year for any incumbents. I had to take that into consideration. I really want to thank the voters who voted for me,” said Tyner.

“I’d like to thank the people, and Ryan Moss of the Georgia tea party, who offered to endorse me, though I would not allow it, but it did give me confidence,” he said.

Tyner said he looks forward to helping the county schools move forward.

“I look forward to the next four years and if I live through it I will have served 32 years,” said Tyner. “The main thing throughout my campaign is that it’s all about the kids. The prize is the child and I’d like to remind the people that it’s not about William Tyner or one person or one individual, but it’s about the kids.”

Nan Barnette (I) prevailed over Maurice Jones 1,741-1,468 votes.

“I would like to thank the people for entrusting me with the education of their children in Gordon County,” Barnette said.

Barnette was first elected to the Gordon County school board in 2006.

In the Post 7 race, Jerry Casey (I) led the race with 1,403 votes over challengers Dewayne Bowen — 1,223 votes — and Darlene Kendrick — 567 votes.

Casey and Bowen will face off in an Aug. 10 runoff.

In the County Commission races:

A late surge in the final two precincts counted Tuesday night gave challenger Chad Steward the margin he needed to defeat incumbent Dick Gordon in the County Commission District 2 seat.

Steward finished first in the three-way race with 2,099 votes (51.4 percent) to Gordon’s 1,250 votes (30.6 percent).

In response, Steward shared, “I would to thank my supporters and family, and I look forward to the November election.”

Third-place finisher Randall Crider had 738 votes (18 percent.)

Steward will face Democrat Mike Brogdon in November. Brogdon was unopposed in the Democratic primary.

In the District 4 County Commission Republican primary, incumbent Becky Hood was forced into an Aug. 10 runoff against challenger Jewell Bunch in a four-way race. Hood polled 2,003 votes (46.2 percent) to Bunch’s 1,069 (24.6 percent).

Two other challengers, Dianne Kirby and Howard Johnson, finished with 811 and 455 votes, respectively. There is no Democratic candidate in the race.
