A two-car accident at the intersection of Highway 53 and Union Grove Road resulted in serious injuries on Thursday, July 22.

According to the Georgia State Patrol (GSP), the accident was reported to GSP Post 43, at 5:22 p.m.

A Chevy C-10 driven by Chris Newberry of Resaca pulled onto 53 in front of a Ford Mustang driven by Tommy Harrell of Lafayette. Charges are pending the completion of the accident report, said a representative for the GSP.

Newberry was driving two passengers, Peggy Cochran and an unnamed minor. Cochran was taken to Floyd Medical Center, where she is currently in stable condition. The minor was taken to T.C. Thompson Children's Hospital where his status could not be released.

Harrell's only passenger, Christine Gatlin, was taken to Erlanger Hospital and was in critical condition.

Newberry reported personal injury at the accident scene and Harrell had a visible injury, according to the Georgia State Patrol.

This intersection was the subject of a letter to the editor run in the June 12 edition of the Calhoun Times.
