The Saturday festivities will begin at 10 with the dedication of a new historic marker by the National Society of Colonial Dames, and continue with the traditional living history demonstrations that have characterized this special program for more than three decades. Cherokee and local craftsmen will demonstrate 19th century pottery, weaving, basket making, quilting, spinning, rug making, blacksmithing, blowgun shooting, woodcarving, and much more. Special guests expected are Cherokee potter Shirley Oswalt from the Snowbird Cherokee community in North Cariolina and Cherokee artist Alva Crowe of the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Indians.
A highlight of the day will be book signings by the authors of newly released books about the Vanns, Moravians, and events surrounding the earliest days of Vann House history. Dr. Tiya Miles will be on hand to sign copies of her preiering book The House on Diamond Hill, the first history of the Vann Plantation ever written. Also, Dr. Rowena McClinton will be on hand to sign cpies of the 2007 Moravian Diary translations. Both books will be available for purchase at the site. Those who might already have a copy of the Diary set are encouraged to bring copies to be signed.Howeverm this will be the first time that The House on Diamond Hill will be available to the public and all proceeds of this book will be going to aid the Friends of the Vann House.
At 2 p.m., there will be presentation made by Dr. Miles, Dr. McClinton and Interpretive Ranger Julia Autry regarding the individuals that made up the Diamond Hill (Vann Family Estate) community. Following the presentations there will be a question-an-answer session with the audience. Contact the site for more information about this panel and discussion.
The Vann House museum will feature a short film and interpretive exhibits on the Vann family and the Cherokee Nation. Staff and volunteers will be on hand to provide tours through the Vann House and give information about Cherokee history. Regular admission prices will be charged. The Friends of the Vann House will also have concessions available for purchase.
