The Calhoun chapter of SEBA has been operating since February 2009. The initial idea to incorporate a local SEBA chapter at the Harris Arts Center was envisioned years ago. The mission of the Arts Center fits perfectly with that of SEBA’s. Calhoun is also an excellent central location in northwest Georgia with many fine bluegrass players all within a 30-mile radius of town.
Monthly jams meet regularly from 3-6 pm. There is no charge for admission and a SEBA membership is not required. Education is one of the core values of the SEBA organization and as bluegrass music in general is often handed down via the oral tradition, it is very common to find musicians of all skill levels freely interacting during the meetings sharing tunes and swapping licks. Attendance ranges from 25-60 participants.
Each year SEBA Calhoun promotes a special concert event as a way of showing appreciation to the Harris Arts Center for its support. This year’s event will feature Spatial Effects. The band brings its own unique musical fare which sets them apart from traditional bluegrass bands. The recipe for their brand of bluegrass music includes several degrees in music, creativity, and a sometimes ‘off the wall’ sense of humor.
The concert will be held on Friday July 23 at 8 p.m. Open jamming will be going on from 6:00-8:00 pm. A special workshop on bluegrass guitar is also being planned. There will be no charge for the workshop. Ticket prices are $15 for general admission; $12 for HAC and SEBA members. Seniors, students and children will receive special discounts.
