The Coosa River Basin Initiative’s Gordon County-based chapter organization, the New Echota Rivers Alliance (NERA), will host a canoe/kayak trip down the Coosawattee River June 19 which will include a program by archaeologist and local historian Jim Langford.

This four-hour, nine-mile paddle will take participants from the Carters Lake Re-Regulation Dam to Langford’s property bordering the Coosawattee.

Langford, president and founder of the Coosawattee Foundation, will provide information about the rich Native American history that surrounds the Coosawattee, including information gleaned from archaeological digs along the river.

The goal of the Foundation is to educate the public about the value of past and present Native American cultures and to work with landowners to preserve archaeological sites and natural environments.

The paddle trip is suitable for beginners with only Class I shoals.

To register for the trip, visit www.coosa.org and fill out the online registration form. Canoe and kayak rentals are available. The trip is free to CRBI/NERA members. Non-members are asked to make a membership donation. For further information, contact David Harrison at 706-547-2275 or via e-mail at dlbharrison@yahoo.com.
