The school’s juniors took the graduation test for the first time this spring and the state released school-by-school 2010 graduation test scores Wednesday afternoon.
Calhoun High was ranked as one of the high schools with the highest passing rate in science, with 95 percent of test takers passing that portion. The statewide average of students who passed science was 90 percent.
Calhoun scored 94 percent in English and math; science increased to 95 percent and social studies came in at 83 percent.
The city school topped the statewide average in every subject, except social studies. State average for English was 90 percent, math — 91 percent and social studies — 85 percent.
Wanda Westmoreland, CHS principal, said she is proud of the scores.
“Overall we are still ahead of the state and ahead of the region. We are feel very proud of these scores,” she said.
“These (scores) will probably go up after summer school. We have students that are retaking the test this summer,” she added.
Students are expected to pass five tests (including a writing assessment test given in the fall) to graduate, but they are allowed to retake a test if they fail.
A student may retake the test as many times as needed, until they make a passing score. The first graduation retake is scheduled for July.

Gordon County School officials said a breakdown of students passing the graduation test for Gordon Central and Sonoraville High was not available Wednesday afternoon.
