Each day caregivers at Gordon Hospital provide the best patient care in the area.

To celebrate their contributions and dedication to the hospital and the patients they serve, Gordon Hospital observes National Nurses Week by hosting a reception and other special events in their honor. During the reception this year, the 2010 H.E.A.R.T. of Nursing Award was presented to Anita Russell, RN. Last year’s winner, Carrie Kuhlman, RN, made the presentation.

“Anita is an excellent clinician with a big heart,” said Tracy Farriba, director of Gordon Home Care, where Russell serves as clinical supervisor and PI coordinator. “Anita will do anything for anybody. When called upon by patient or colleague, Anita gives unconditionally from the heart.”

According to Amy Jordon, MSN, chief nursing officer at Gordon Hospital, the H.E.A.R.T. acronym stands for helpfulness, enthusiasm, achievement and adaptability, responsibility and teamwork.

“These are all qualities that Anita exemplifies,” Jordon said. “We are so proud to honor her with this award.”

Russell, who was nominated for the award by her peers, has been employed by Gordon Hospital for 16.5 years. She and her husband, Edward, are the parents of a daughter, Caitlin, who recently earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing.

“I am honored to be recognized by my peers to be chosen for this award,” Russell said. “It means a great deal to me and I am truly grateful to everyone.”

In addition to Russell, Gordon Hospital also recognized Esther Ivascu, RN, as the Progressive Care Unit (PCU) Employee of the Year. Ivascu has been employed at Gordon Hospital for 18 years.

“Esther was nominated by her coworkers because of her positive, helpful, and caring ways,” said Patti Hoover, director of PCU. “She is an example of a compassionate professional.”

Ivascu said she was very honored to receive the recognition.

“I thank God that He gives me the strength to love my job, my patients, and coworkers,” she said. “I love my job and I hope that I can continue to take care of my patients.”

She and her husband, George, reside in Calhoun and have four children and four grandchildren. She enjoys playing the piano, reading, classical music, gardening, and nursing.

“I fell in love with Gordon Hospital in 1988 on a visit to Florida,” Ivascu added. “I stopped to visit the church and the hospital and I said that if I ever got out of Indiana that I would move to Calhoun and work for this hospital.”

Having quality leaders is the backbone of any organization and Gordon Hospital is certainly no different. This year, Gordon Hospital recognized Cindy Davis by presenting her with the annual D.O.V.E Leadership Award. D.O.V.E. stands for Dedicated, Open Minded, Value Driven, and Encouraging.

Davis, director of cardiopulmonary services at Gordon Hospital, holds a Bachelor of Science degree in respiratory therapy. She was nominated and elected to receive the award by the members of Gordon Hospital’s leadership team.

“Cindy is very deserving of this honor,” said Sam Huenergardt, chief operating officer for Gordon Hospital. “She is a vital part of our hospital team and we are thankful for all of her contributions over the years.”

While she is happy to receive the award, Davis said she is honored to work for such a wonderful hospital.

“Gordon Hospital is a place where everyone is treated like family,” she explained. “I get to work with the most awesome people who care about each other and the patients they serve.”

Davis and her husband, Keith, reside in Calhoun and have a daughter, Sarah. In her spare time, Davis enjoys exercising, gardening, reading and traveling.
