The camp drew 80 kids on the first day, with 62 attending the early, camp, and 18 showing up for the afternoon camp.
CHS coach Chip Henderson expected more kids in the morning session as the week progressed, with the number most likely settling in the high 60’s.
The morning camp focused on younger kids ages six through 10, while the afternoon camp had the older (11 & up), more skilled campers.
“We usually have more kids in the younger group because a lot of kids in the older group are practicing or playing with their travel ball teams,” said Henderson. “But we are pleased with the turnout.”
Helping Henderson out with this year’s camp are former players Brody Pullen, Eric Fowler, and CHS assistant coach David Hall. Several players will also be helping as well.
“This camp gives the players a chance to give back to the community in return for their support during the season,” said Henderson. “A lot of the players that I have now came through this camp so it is a pretty neat story that some of these former campers are now coming back to instruct.”
As with the typical summer sports camp, Henderson and his assistants teach the basic fundamentals of the game with a few more detailed instructions going to the older kids.
“At the younger group their skills are not quite as advanced and we just want to introduce them to the game and teach the basic fundamentals,” said Henderson. “With the older guys you can do a little bit more because they have a little more understanding of what you are saying and the drill work that is involved.”
