Hundreds of parents, family members and friends gathered Friday in the Northwest Georgia Trade and Convention Center in Dalton for Sonoraville High School’s graduation ceremony, which ended with 214 graduates tossing their caps in the air.

Valedictorian Greg Mulkey and Salutatorian Shelby Brown delivered a humorous and insightful dialogue — a combined commencement speech — that recalled the past four years of high school.

“Shelby, do you remember our first day ever of school? We had our new backpacks, new shoes, new everything I was crying and holding on to my mom for dear life,” Mulkey said.

“How things have changed! We will head off to college with our parents holding onto us for dear life, struggling to let go,” Brown replied.

The top two students also had some serious words for their classmates.

“As someone once said, graduation is only a concept. In real life, everyday you graduate. Graduation is a process that goes on until the end of your life,” Brown said.

“As we journey on this road I like to call life, we will always remember that we are the standard of excellence,” Mulkey added.

Tyler Brookshire, Sonoraville’s student council president, gave the opening greeting and shared words of wisdom with his classmates, quoting Aristotle.

“Remember, we are what repeatedly do,” Brookshire said.

Principal Bruce Potts said the class of 2010 was the first class to progress through four years of high school under the framework of the Professional Association of Georgia Educators High School Redesign initiative known as WOW (Working on the Work).

“We have applied the process for Working on the Work and are starting to see the Four R’s come to life,” Potts said.

“Rigor, relevance, relationships and results … this is the common thread that binds every school in the Gordon County School system and gives us the laser-like focus needed to lead our students to success,” he said.

Potts followed by reading off a long list of academic, athletic and literary accomplishments before the graduates received their diplomas.

“Seniors, you are the evidence of our results … and I couldn’t be more proud. With this said, together we have accomplished our vision. You know it!” Potts said.

“No matter where your paths may lead … Sonoraville High School will always be your home,” he added.

Principal Bruce Potts said he was proud of his graduates, and said they were a part of a multitasking generation.

“Two years ago they signed a commitment to graduate,” Potts said. “They’ve accomplished it.”

“Seniors you are evidence of relevance,” he added.
