A Gordon County man is awaiting sentencing after being found guilty of Voluntary Manslaughter on Friday.

Keith Travis Landers, 44, of Resaca, was charged with death of his wife Sheryal Annette Landers.

According to a police narrative obtained by the Calhoun Times, Sheryal Landers was found dead of a gunshot wound inside her home at 1431 Hill City Road in Resaca on the night of Oct. 30, 2006.

Keith told police that his wife had shot herself.

According to the police narrative written by Deputy Michael Burnette, Keith told his father that he found his wife dead inside their bathroom after hearing a gunfire.

“He stated he did not know if his wife was still alive or dead,” Burnette wrote in the narrative.

When deputies inspected the Landers’ home the bathroom door was locked and the door had to be pried open using a butter knife from the kitchen.

Upon entry to the bathroom deputies found Sheryal lying across the toilet in a pool of blood. A stainless steel handgun was also found on the floor by the victim.

Keith was arrested and charged with murder on Nov. 8, 2006.

According to an arrest timeline, Sheryal had been seeking help from a women’s outreach group just days before her death, contacting the group on Oct. 13, 2006.

The victim told shelter officials that she had been suffering from verbal and emotional abuse and that she had not seen her husband since Oct. 8, 2006.

During the investigation into the death of Sheryal, officers found several works of poetry and letters written by Keith Landers and addressed to the victim.

“On the wings of hell you fly. Here’s a bullet with your name. A rose is just another weed,” Keith wrote in one poem.

In another poem Keith wrote of chasing the victim and being unable to get away.

Keith was found guilty by a jury late Friday May 14, 2010. He will be sentenced on May 27.
