The Georgia Partnership for Excellence in Education and the Georgia School Boards Association will hold a half-day session Friday, June 4, from 8:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m., at Georgia Northwestern Technical College.

The forum is aimed at future education decision makers, such as state legislators, school board and school council members and others with an interest in education policy. The “Education Policy Forums: Sessions for Candidates and Community Leaders” is based on non-partisan, research-based information.

The first portion of each session will focus on top current issues that will likely impact education this year including the challenge of school funding amidst budget cuts; Georgia’s Race to the Top quest; continuing the adoption of 21st century high academic standards and high quality assessments; the expansion of charter schools; and other emerging issues. The second half of each session will focus on the roles, responsibilities, ethics and additional issues related to effective school board governance.

The Rome session is one of seven Forums presented across Georgia in June. There is no cost. Registration is available by visiting www.gsba.com and clicking on “Online Registration” on the left side of the page. The registration form is also available on the Georgia Partnership site at www.gpee.org and can be faxed to 404-223-2299.

We are thankful for school board members and elected officials who provide a service to our community. If you think you might want to run in the future, this looks like a good opportunity to learn more about their role.
