Shelia Callaway says in this economic climate, Tallatoona Citizen Action Program is serving more families than ever.

That is why once again Tallatoona will be hosting the Surplus Food The Emergency Food Assistance program (TEFAP) to service low-income families in Gordon County.

Tallatoona staff will be at the National Guard Armory on May 26 to provide qualifying families with healthy foods. The program is a partnership with the Department of Human Resources.

“This program is so important for low income families,” Callaway, Tallatoona coordinator, said. “It’s important because these families don’t have to pay for the program.”

Traditionally Tallatoona has hosted TEFAP each quarter, but due to DHR budget cuts the program has been limited in the number of times it will take place each year. However, Callway says that has not deterred families from participating.

“The last couple of distributions we have had more families than usual participated,” Callaway said.

The food comes from U.S. Department of Agriculture surplus, which includes canned carrots, peas, tomatoes, dry pinto beans, peanut butter, spaghetti sauce, black-eyed peas, green beans, corn flake cereal, tomato soup and various other foods.

The program will take place Wednesday, May 26 from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m., or until food is gone.

It will be on a first-come, first-serve basis and to be eligible for this program participants must live in Gordon County, and bring proof of Physical address and know the household income.

Order for homebound individuals must be an authorized. For more information please call 706-629-2333
