When I exclaimed this sad news, my kids asked who he was and I immediately belted out
“As coroner, I must aver
I’ve thoroughly examined her
And she’s not only merely dead,
She’s really most sincerely dead.”
Not only did my kids immediately recognize this verse, but they sang along when I continued through the rest of the song. I don’t know if I’ve mentioned my one OCD habit, but when I find a CD that I like, I play it, weeks and sometimes months on end until I find another one. Without the music to help me along, I was reminded that the great songs have beats and I was nowhere close.
This song is on a Halloween CD that I listened to from September until about December all because of this song.
I grew up watching “The Wizard of Oz” in technocolor on ABC. When it came on, I would anticipate its viewing all day. Mom would pop Jiffy-pop popcorn – the kind that came in the little pie tin, over the stove and I would throw on my favorite pajamas (usually my daddy’s t-shirt) and watch wide –eyed.
Imagine my utter shock when I wanted to share this movie with one of my closest friends in middle school and she exclaimed “I don’t like that movie.”
WHAT?!?! How can you not like the wonderful wizard of Oz?
The flying monkeys scared her. I just couldn’t buy into her argument that her phobia of flying monkeys was no different than my fear of the Oompalumpa’s in “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.” With their orange hair and freaky hair, they are far more scarier than the monkeys. The only thing scarier is Johnny Depp in any Tim Burton movie.
I think the next time it comes on, I’ll buy some Jiffy-Pop and snuggle with the girls in front of the television and enjoy a bit of my childhood.
Thank you, Meinhardt Raabe, for a fun song that will carry your memory to even more generations.
