A man accused of killing another inmate at the Floyd County Jail pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter Friday morning and was sentenced to serve 15 years in prison.

Emanuel Steffon Smith was charged with murder and assault charges in relation to the incident and pleaded to the lesser included offense of manslaughter.

He will also serve five years on probation after his sentence is completed.

According to jail officials, the incident occurred between Smith and Larry Stokes, a Gordon County inmate being housed at the jail on a meth conviction, during breakfast in cell block L on Feb. 26, 2008.

Officers found Stokes face down on a bunk bed and unresponsive after a fight. Medical technicians were immediately called, and jail officers and paramedics administered CPR to Stokes before and during transport to Floyd Medical Center.

Stokes briefly regained a pulse and breathing, but never regained consciousness after the incident and died at FMC on March 2.

Judge Jack Niedrach also stipulated that Smith will have no contact with the victim’s wife or children after release.

Smith was serving five years for his conviction of burglary and possession of tools for the commission of a felony and will get credit for his time served, as mandated by state law.
