In an effort to curb prom night drinking local emergency personnel conducted a mock crash.

Seniors from Gordon Central, Calhoun and Sonoraville high schools gather to watch a mock car crash on Tuesday morning.

The crash is done every year a few weeks before prom to remind students about the consequences of reckless driving.

According to Gordon County Fire Chief David Hawkins, emergency workers try to make the wreck as real as possible because some of these kids have never seen one.

“They don’t realize the consequences”, said Hawkins. “Speed kills. Believe it or not, you don’t have to be going that fast to be involved in a deadly accident.”

Christy Nickolson with Gordon County Emergency Management said that the mock crash also reminds kids to use their seat belts no matter where they are in the car.
