Cancer survivors encouraged to sign up for survivors lap

Luminaries: Luminaries can be purchased to honor cancer survivors. Decorated bags are $5, gold luminary bags are $25 and “torches of hope” are $100.

It’s the time of year when cancer research is prevalent in the community’s collective consciousness. Relay for Life, the annual national fundraiser for cancer research, is approaching.

This year’s Gordon County Relay will begin Friday, May 7, and continue through Saturday, May 8, at the Northwest Georgia Regional Fairgrounds.

Gordon County residents have three options when purchasing a luminary to honor a cancer patient. A decorated bag can be purchased for $5; a gold luminary bag is $25, and “Torches of Hope” can be purchased with a $100 donation. The luminaries will be lit at sunset around the track at the fairgrounds May 7.

Deadline to purchase a torch is April 26, according to Gordon County Relay Marketing Committee Chairperson Amanda Clavino. The deadline for bag luminaries is April 29.

“Each luminaria represents the life of someone who has battled cancer,” Clavino said. “It is a beautiful sight when all the bags with candles are illuminated around the track. The Luminaria Ceremony is a moving way to remember loved ones lost to cancer and to pay tribute to cancer survivors.”

The Relay for Life committee of Gordon County invites all cancer survivors to join in the survivor’s lap May 7. Dinner and registration begins at 5 p.m. The survivor group lap will take place at 7 p.m.

“We encourage survivors to come and show their support,” said survivors committee member Barbara Clark, a cancer survivor herself.

Wheelchairs and golf carts will be available during the survivor lap for those who cannot walk, Clark said.

“We’re trying to stamp out cancer,” she said. “This is to honor the cancer survivors.”

Survivors who would like to participate in this special celebration and individuals who would like to purchase a luminary, should visit www.relayforlife.org/Gordon to do so.
