A Rome man, charged with the February 2008 beating death of another jail inmate, is on the trial calendar in Floyd County for the week of April 19.

Emanuel Steffon Smith is charged with two counts of murder, aggravated assault and aggravated battery in connection with the crime.

A coroner’s inquest in June 2008 determined that the death of Larry Stokes, an inmate at the Floyd County Jail, in March was a homicide.

The injury occurred during an alleged fight between Stokes and Smith, jail officials reported. Stokes was a Gordon County inmate being housed at the jail when an incident occurred during breakfast in cellblock L on Feb. 26, 2008.
