Drivers will soon have a smoother ride when local municipalities receive Department of Transportation funding to resurface city and county roadways.

Calhoun, Fairmount and unincorporated Gordon County will receive Local Assistance Road Plan (LARP) funds through the DOT to resurface nearly six miles of local roads.

Three Calhoun roads are on the LARP list: Edwards Street, Richards Street and Yellow Jacket Drive.

The total mileage comes to .67 miles, said City Administrator Eddie Peterson.

The city must wait for DOT approval before paving, though.

“(It could) very well be eight or nine months before we pave these,” he said.

The city usually ends up paying about 60 percent of the cost of LARP projects, he said. Calhoun and Gordon County officials will not know the cost until after the project is underway.

About 800 tons of mix per mile are typically used in paving, so the total amount of mix needed for this project comes to about 560 tons, Peterson said.

Gordon County will also receive LARP funds to repave more than five miles of county roads. About .98 miles of Belwood Road will be repaved, Pocket Road will receive .94 pavement and the majority of the pavement, roughly 2,400 tons, will go to the east end of the county to Cash Road, where 3.21 miles will be repaved.

Alvin Long, chairman for the Gordon County Board of Commissioners said he had hoped that the county would receive additional funds to resurface a portion of Mount Zion road in Resaca.

The City of Fairmount received LARP funds to repair .27 miles on Tennessee Street, about a sixth of what officials said they hoped to accomplish.

Mr Long hoped for additional funds for Mt. Zion Road!! Is Belwook Road, Pocket Road and Cash Road already chopped up waiting on pavement???? Mt. Zion has been a mess for months now. Why was this road torn up in the first place. This road has been dug up for 6 months now with the promise it will be paved in the spring. Why was taxpayer dollars wasted by paving in 30 degree weather. If this money had been saved until the right time of the year for paving that would have been 2 more miles of pavement that could have gone toward all projects. Mt Zion Rd was in bad need of repair in November 2009, but now it horrible. Who is responsable for wasting these taxpayer dollars? Why was this wasted??? WHY WAS THE ROAD TORN UP IN NOVEMBER 2009??
