Members of the Howard Jones Golf Benefit planning committee are hard at work organizing the seventh annual event; the proceeds will go toward constructing a cancer center on the campus of Gordon Hospital. From left: Helen Jones, Giles Jones, Stella Bailey, Sam Huenergardt, Frank Sullivan, Judy Jackson and Shirley Stepp. Also on the committee are Autumn Lester, Tom Shanahan, Scott Fletcher and Mark Molleson.
The select shot format will begin with a shotgun start at noon. A sack lunch will be provided at 11:30 a.m. in the Mulligans Snack Bar.
“This is more than just a golf benefit,” said organizer Helen Jones, wife of the late Howard Jones. “The proceeds from this event are literally turning dreams into reality.”
The Jones’ dream of having a cancer center in Calhoun begin in October 2002 when Howard was diagnosed with cancer in his spinal cord and the couple learned that he would not be able to receive radiation treatments at Gordon Hospital.
“Howard and I saw our opportunity to one day contribute a percentage of our estate toward the opening of a cancer center at Gordon Hospital,” said Helen, who also serves as chairman of the Gordon Hospital Foundation Board. “He was passionate about doing this for patients like himself, and also for our family and community residents to come.”
Sadly, Howard passed away almost nine months after his diagnosis. But his family has kept his legacy and dreams alive through the annual golf benefit.
“We are now closer than ever to seeing our dream come true,” Helen added.
Gordon Hospital was issued a certificate of need by the State of Georgia last December to add a linear accelerator – better known as radiation therapy – to its cancer services.
“The proceeds from this benefit, along with the $100,000 from the past six years, will help build a multi-million dollar cancer center,” Helen explained. “The Jones family, Gordon Hospital, and the Gordon Hospital Foundation invite you to be a player and/or contributor to this wonderful cause.”
The entry fee is $400 for a team of four or $100 for individuals. Sponsorship levels are available at $300, $500, and $1,000. Checks should be made payable to the Howard Jones Cancer Foundation and mailed to 154 Robertson Road, Calhoun, GA 30701. For more information about the benefit, please call 706-629-7493.
