Calhoun soccer coach Ruben Maldonado on Saturday identified the player as Calhoun High sophomore Francisco “Paco” Vasquez.
A Gordon County E-911 official told the Calhoun Times that at 4:29 p.m. on Friday, 911 received a call about a young male who was swimming across the Oostaunala River at Mauldin Road by the soccer fields. The 911 caller told officials Friday that the young man never resurfaced.
Calhoun Fire officials continued their search on Saturday morning, and a dive team from the Georgia State Patrol was also on the scene. They will continue their search today.
Maldonado said Vasquez “was always willing to help both teams — the varsity and junior varsity. … He was always so polite.”
