Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) filed the complaint earlier today asking the Justice Department to investigate Deal’s conduct while in office.
The U.S. House Office of Congressional Ethics announced Monday that based on their findings Deal could have possibly committed six House ethics rules violations based on "a lucrative agreement with the state of Georgia."
CREW says that Deal had "improperly used his position in Congress to influence Georgia state officials for his personal financial interest."
Based on the information in the House Office of Congressional Ethics finding CREW has asked that criminal charges be pursued.
The organizations is also alleging that Deal misrepresented himself financial disclosure forms.
CREW executive director Melanie Sloan issued the following statement on the group's official Web site.
“Contrasting Mr. Deal’s tax return with his personal financial disclosure form, it is crystal clear that he lied about the true nature of the $75,000 and the fact that he was a corporate officer of his business so that he could keep the money.” Sloan continued, “Mr. Deal can run, but he can’t hide. Although beyond the reach of the House, the Justice Department still has jurisdiction and – particularly given that Mr. Deal is running for another public office – Americans deserve a full and thorough investigation of Mr. Deal’s sordid conduct.”
Deal recently vacated his seat in the 9th District to run for Governor in Georgia.
