Cagle ruling quashes bid to limit interbasin transfers

In a procedural ruling, the Georgia Senate Wednesday rejected a bid by senators from outside of metro Atlanta to put restrictions on state approval of water supply projects that involve piping water from one river basin into another.

Sen. J.B. Powell, D-Blythe, attempted to amend a Senate bill pertaining to the Metropolitan North Georgia Water Planning District by adding criteria the state would be required to consider before allowing so-called "interbasin transfers."

For years, lawmakers representing districts in the Savannah River Basin and other parts of Georgia have expressed fears that metro Atlanta water utilities would seek to grab water from outside of the Chattahoochee River basin to help supply the metro region's growing population.
