Ruth is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Jelks Roddenbery of Columbus, Georgia. Robert is the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Starr Mathews of Calhoun, Georgia.
Grandparents of the bride are Judge Elisha Mullins Whisnant of Columbus, Georgia, Mrs. Eliza-beth Willis Whisnant, Dr. Seaborn Anderson Roddenbery and the late Grace George Roddenbery of Hamilton, Georgia. The groom’s grandparents are Mrs. Jean Chappell Waters and the late Dr. Robert Alston Waters of Chattanooga, Tennessee, Mr. Bill Delaney Mathews and the late Robbie Starr Mathews of Calhoun, Georgia.
The double ring ceremony was performed by Dr. Edwin Cooper of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Columbus, Georgia. The candlelight ceremony was enhanced by four silver candelabra adorned with magnolia in the chancel area of the church. The arrangements on the altar were hot pink hydrangea, yellow and pink roses,white, pink and yellow French tulips, ivory stock, daffodils and yellow forsythia. Pink camellias, roses, mini green hydrangea and magnolia designated the family seating.
A program of music was provided by organist and pianist Janis Maxwell and trumpeter Bryan Agan. Selections included “Air” from The Water Music Suite and “Le Rejouissance” from the Royal Fireworks by Handel and “Trumpet Voluntary” by Purcell.
DeAun Mae Hayden of Atlanta, Georgia was the maid of honor and Tiffany Mimbs Anderson of Athens, Georgia was the matron of honor. Bridesmaids were Mary Sides Roddenbery, sister-in-law of the bride, of Tampa, Florida, Albright Gaither Christopher of Columbus, Georgia, Anna Franklin Dickerson of Charleston, South Carolina, Helen Bond Mathews, cousin of the groom, of Washington, DC, and Susan Mathews Rutland, cousin of the groom, of Calhoun, Georgia.
They wore cocktail-length strapless dresses in muted metallic brocade with fan pleated neck-lines, ruched waistlines and skirts that fell into wide pleats. The bridesmaids carried hand-tied bouquets of warm pink and yellow roses, viburnum, mini green hydrangea, daffodils, Nerine lilies, sweet peas and spray roses in spring colors wrapped in ivory ribbon.
The bride was given in marriage by her parents and escorted by her father. The bride’s gown had a bodice made of ivory Alencon lace with cap sleeves and scooped neckline appliquéd with Alencon lace flowers. The gown had a modified a-line skirt of ivory Italian silk satin with a ruched sash at the waist that fell over the chapel length train. She wore a chapel length veil of ivory illusion tulle for the ceremony and a matching finger tip veil for the reception. The bride carried a hand-tied bouquet of white roses and stephanotis wrapped in ivory satin.
The groom’s father, James Starr Mathews, and his brother, William Barton Mathews of Atlanta, were the best men. The groomsmen were Dr. Seaborn Anderson Roddenbery V, brother of the bride, of Tampa, Florida, Hunter McDonald Groves of Cambridge, Massachusetts, Leroy Lamont Lannae, III of Washington, Georgia, Charles Kiel Garella and Jennings Randall Snider of Charlotte, North Carolina.
The mother of the bride wore a formal two piece gown of French blue silk with ruffled cuffs and portrait collar . The groom’s mother wore a formal Merlot colored silk taffeta dress with a ruched waist and short jacket . The mothers carried all white tussie mussie bouquets of sweetheart roses, viburnum and Nerine lilies.
John Mullins Whisnant, uncle of the bride, of Slidell, Louisana read selected scripture. Anne Hayes Lee and Hannah Martha Shaw of Atlanta, Georgia greeted the guests as they arrived at the church.
Following the ceremony a reception of dinner and dancing by The Tams was held at the Athens Country Club.
The evening before the wedding, the groom’s parents entertained with a rehearsal dinner in the Lobby of the Classic Center Theatre in Athens. A stringed quartet played during cocktails and din-ner. After the dinner, a Band Party was given by the groom’s parents for all guests attending the wedding at the Fire Hall. Music was provided for dancing by the 10:30 Band .
The couple will reside in Calhoun.
