Gordon County resident have prepared a warm welcome for the return of members of Georgia National Guard’s 108th Cavalry and painted downtown Calhoun a vivid red, white and blue.
"It's good to be here," said Sgt. David Garland.
Garland was reunited with his 9-year-old son Chase.
Friends and family waited in the parking lot of the old Justin's Dodge in Calhoun for the soldiers to unload charter buses and climb aboard flat bed trucks and ride through town where they were greeted with cheers.
"This is history," said Jenny Temples of Fairmount.
Gordon County residents have anticipated the return for quite some time and local resident Kristie Pratt said prayers helped bring her brother-in-law Don Lowe safely home.
“I’ve said a lot of prayers for him and his wife (Stephanie Lowe),” Pratt said. “She put up flags all the way to his house and a lot of his friends have really come together.”
