One Saturday in April people from across Gordon County will come together for the betterment of the community.

Chris Mockett, a local organizer for the Day of Service 2010 is hoping those from all religious affiliations, service organizations and walks of life will join him in helping beautify Gordon County on April 24.

“We really want to get the community involved in helping each other,” Mockett said.

The Day of Service is sponsored and organized by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and Mockett says last year’s event united people from various backgrounds in service project across the southeast United States.

Last year volunteers collected food for organizations that help the hungry, constructed houses, helped families in need by roofing houses and doing other similar projects and cleaned up the grounds of schools and other community agencies.

“It is all about lifting one another up, working together. This brings us closer to one another and to our God,” he said.

Mockett said while the event is sponsored by the LDS it is not exclusive to church members.

“We are trying to get other faith-based organizations involved and other non religious organizations,” he said. “This is a non-proselytizing event.”

The Day of Service got a stamp of approval from the county’s Board of Commissioners when a proclamation was presented to Mockett and fellow organizer, Brandon Wilkinson.

The proclamation urges “all citizens to join,” and the board wants April 24 to be “a special day of meaning to those who need relief.”

“This is a phenomenal day and I am every excited because it is local,” Mockett said. “We are excited about the whole prospect of projects.”
