Four applicants were interviewed for the unexpired term of Wanda Davis, who resigned in December 2009.
The four candidates included: John Chattam, Dewayne Bowen, Edward “Maurice” Jones and Bobby Hall.
The candidates were allowed to review the questions ahead of time and were required to answer additional questions from board members at the Gordon County Board of Education office Monday, March 1.
After the interview process, Chris Johnson, a current BOE member nominated Casey to fill the position.
Board chair William Tyner described Casey as someone who could hit the ground running and is knowledgeable about schools affairs at the state and district level.
He also said all candidates were highly qualified with great resumes and did well with the interview.
“We’ve had five good applicants and we’ve had some great candidates,” Tyner said.
Casey previously served as a county school board member for 28 consecutive years, and he has 33 years of experience in human resources, safety and security.
“Education has played a major role in my life in Gordon County and even in retirement I am still interested in the best for our community,” Casey said.
Casey described himself as able to “learn from mistakes.”
He is retired, and has two sons, seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren
During his interview with the board, he was asked if he would seek re-election. Casey said he felt he didn’t know the answer.
“Right now I wouldn’t tell you I would, but I wouldn’t shut the door,” Casey said.
The term he will be filling is set to end in December.
