A woman died in a fire at 1492 Plainview Road in Gordon County yesterday afternoon.

At 8 p.m. Wednesday night, Gordon County Coroner James Carver identified the victim as 38-year-old Sandra Carol Morgan. He said she lived in the house that burned but did not know if she was the homeowner or if she rented the house.

He said her body will be sent to the GBI crime lab in Atlanta for an autopsy.

According to Gordon County Deputy Coroner, Heath Derryberry, Morgan was the only victim and lived in the home with her father.

While no official cause of death can be determined until autopsy results are returned, Derryberry said it is believed that Morgan succumbed to injuries sustained during the fire.

The cause and origin of the fire can not be determined at this time.

The fire call came in at 2:25 p.m. and Gordon County Fire Chief David Hawkins said officials arrived on the scene in a matter of minutes.

"It didn't take long to knock the fire down," Hawkins said.

Hawkins said the blaze was contained to one bedroom in the front of the home.

Gordon County Sheriff's public information officer, Chief Robert Paris, said at the scene that officials did not know if the woman was the owner of the home.

Investigators from both the sheriff's office and fire department were on the scene.

That's sad. there have been so many house fires in Calhoun lately. Are there any similar reasons why these fires have occured? Seems like there is a house fire listed in the paper every week lately. Really sad that someone was killed.
