Two Calhoun City Schools principals and one assistant principal have announced their plans to retire at the end of the school year.

Principal Wanda Westmoreland of Calhoun High, principal Sherry Campbell of Calhoun Primary and assistant principal Vivian Moss of Calhoun High will retire May 2010.

Westmoreland has been a part of the Calhoun City School system for more than 15 years working with high school students as either a guidance counselor or principal.

Campbell has been a part of the Calhoun City School system for more than 30 years. She has worked with students from kindergarten through eighth grade as either a teacher or administrator.

Moss has been a part of the Calhoun middle and high school system for more than a decade. She was an English teacher in 1972 and became an administrator in 2006.

New Leadership

Superintendent Michele Taylor said she appreciates the leadership of all three women who will retire.

"We have incredibly talented leaders in our school system and in our community. We are fortunate to be able to add more than 20 years of administrative experience as we welcome Mrs. Holcomb and Mrs. Bumgardner to our school family," Taylor said.

Kelly Bumgardner, who is the current Sonoraville Elementary principal, will fill the principal vacancy at Calhoun High School.

And, Beth Painter Holcomb, who is the current principal of Red Bud Elementary, will fill the principal vacancy at Calhoun Primary.

Gordon County School now hiring

Superintendent Bill McCown of the Gordon County School knew of the two principals decision to leave after this year.

McCown said the county school system has begun the process of hiring two new principals.

“The positions have been posted today,” McCown said on Thursday. “It’s typically a 10 day posting.”

Visit www.gcbe.org for more information about the job openings.

Rumor is that they left because Calhoun offered more money. Others are retiring due to the effect of days cut and how it will affect their retirement pay. Can you blame them. of course that's is hear say.

Why is it that Gordon County is losing so many Principals?

Could our School Board and Superintendent be to blame?

Mrs. Bumgardner will be greatly missed by the county school system. As a special education teacher that has worked for her, she has shown kindness and support to all of my students. As a member of her faculty, she is fair and consistent. Mrs. Bumgardner has high expectations for her students, faculty and staff and for the I thank her.

May God Bless You, Mrs. Bumgardner!

I hope that everyone will take all of the same time and energy they have spent on blogging this issue to death and spend that same amount of time and energy helping a kid with homework, a school project, assisting teachers in the classroom or otherwise volunteering for our schools. Wow, think of all that we could accomplish.

Why is it that Dr. McCown states that he has the New Position's for Administration posted and yet if you look on the GCBE web page there are no listings for these postions. This is just one of his many lies again!

PreachersDaughter/CurtisLowe:

My. My. My. Preachers Daughter, this is no venue to hash out your personal vendetta. My misdeeds? Public Knowledge? You must have heard something I have not. Is there proof? What I want to do is talk about your misdeeds. Is there proof??? You are so bitter. Try to remember that your actions directly caused your predicament. Look in the mirror when you want to place blame. Don't hate the whole world. You need to get help for your anger. This cannot be good for your loved ones. I really don't care about your misdeeds. They are not my concern. However, I wish for you a long life full of joy and happiness. As I stated before, this is no venue for personal vendettas.

sticksandstones, you have been threatening to sue folks all over this county for years. Sadly for you, you're misdeeds (falsifying teacher observations, questionable behavior w/subordinates, numerous complaints from GAE PAGE reps, etc) are public knowledge. While threats of litigation may have gotten a principal spot for a sibling, you'll just have to be satisfied with taking personal responsibility for your behavior.

I am very proud that K. Bumgardner took the opportunity to better herself. She is a great principal and will do a great job at Calhoun.

Congratulations to you Kelly!!

It amazes me that the group of people that want to vent are the ones who don't have all of the facts or even know how the school system works. They only want what they're after and when they don't get it, they want to attack that person. I wonder if they've ever considered that you are governed by rules and regulations, just as everyone else is in the school system.

Congratulations to all of those individuals are who are making positive changes in their lives. I believe the bottom line is that the county Board of Education should take a look at leadership at the highest level. Principals of the caliber of Mrs. Bumgardner and Mrs. Holcomb would not leave a system of Gordon County's magnitude if good leadership had been in place. Where is that one local person who isn't using Gordon County Schools as a stepping stone rather than really caring about our community?

Curtislowe:

I know who you are. You are a coward hiding behind all of your little cute names here on this online blog. Obviously, it pleases you to be unkind to people. What a bitter person you must be. It would seem to me that you must even hate yourself. When will you realize that your predicament is the result of your own actions? Your attack today in this blog just shows the kind of person you really are. Why don't you channel all that extra time on your hands into something productive like working in your raised vegetable beds or something. Do something with your life other than trying to make people suffer for some injustice you believe you have suffered. Rest assured your hateful attacks will no longer go without being addressed with legal representation. In other words, you are going to get your butt sued!

Kelly Bumgardner nor Beth Holcomb were asked to leave the County School District. They did so of their own accord. I wish them both the very best of luck in all their endeavors.

Kelly Bumgardner is an excellent leader and deserves this spectacular opportunity. She has nothing but the highest hopes and expectations of ALL students, including those with special needs. She built a respectful, caring, safe, enjoyable environment at BES and it is just not the same without her. There are few people in the schools who truly and deeply care about each and EVERY student. She makes it her goal to be in the classroom and to know the students. She does whatever it takes to encourage them and motivate them. She made Belwood the excellent school that it is and it's legacy only continues because of the ground work she laid. Given more time at SES, you'd see the same results there. Getting mad at Kelly because your child (who is out of district and not suppose to go to Belwood)can't come to the school is absurd. She has no say or control over who can go where, that is a Central Office call. Not to mention that complaining about not getting into Belwood just shows how great of a school she helped to build. At least Kelly was in the classrooms, knew the kids, kept teachers doing their jobs, tried to improve, cared about the school and community, and honestly tries her best (it's a lot different nowadays). Instead of blaming Kelly, why not look at why all of these excellent teachers and administrators (Holcomb, Bumgardner, Griffith) are leaving? Calhoun City is getting a great group and will only getting better because of them.

Good luck in the city Kelly! We'll miss you, and we wish you the best. Good luck to Beth and Wanda and the rest!

Dr. Taylor, have anymore openings out there???

Thank you Rome Tribune for reminding folks to not put false information or personal bias opinions. Print your name if you choose to stand by what you say. Principals are placed in those positions becasue they do possess the right qualities for the job. We applaud all of them for the good job they do. Great job principals....keep serving our students and leading in our community.

I find it very upsetting that people feel that they have to resort to saying horrible things about people in this manner. In my opinion - you are cowards!! I have had the opportunity to work with many of these leaders, both professionally and personally, and find them all to be high quality educators. Being a former educator, it has been my experience that when people are critical of others it is usually out of jealousy or possibly you have had confrontations with them because of your children! We as a community should be very pleased and proud of both local school systems! They both strive for excellence!

Thank you Calhoun City schools and Gordon County schools for all you do! I salute you for the sacrifices you make!

"I've been in politics and leadership long enough...fine job..." is a dolt.

Facts: Any performance test: bottom five. Felons exceed fellows. Fine job? Not it isn't.

Facts drown [biased] opinions.

As far as BES goes---The new principal is doing a spectaular job. He is very supportive of all his teachers, students, and parents. He can be seen any given day walking the halls, talking to students and teachers, as well as greeting in the office; all on top of his PRINCIPAL duties. Everyone here could not have gotten a better principal that cares and is respectful to his staff, students, and parents. For those that said you never see the new principal haven't looked because his presence is very evident throughout the school. Staying at Belwood was the best decision for many teahers and students. Many parents will attest to the NEW positive atmosphere and the great job going on at BES!
