Hardin, previously known for her appearance on another television competition, “America’s Got Talent,” was featured on Wednesday’s episode of the Fox hit
show “American Idol,” which was filmed in June in Atlanta.
Hardin intrigued the judges, Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Kara DioGuardi, as well as guest judge R&B singer Mary J. Blige, when she walked into the audition wearing a guitar costume.
Cowell, who is known for his biting sarcasm, rolled his eyes and asked Hardin why she wore the costume.
“Well because like I was a guitar for Halloween, and everybody was like ‘that’s so cute,’ and so I figured since I sing I was gonna be a guitar,” she said.
Hardin proceeded to sing Loretta Lynn’s “You Ain’t Woman Enough to Take My Man” to mixed reviews from the judges.
“You understand how slightly bizarre this is,” Cowell quipped. “You’re dressed as a guitar but also look a little bit like an insect.”
Jackson and DioGuardi were a bit more forgiving.
“You’re funny,” Jackson said with a smile. “You’re hilarious.”
“Normally someone dressed in a guitar like that, I’d just write them off,” DioGuardi added, “but you’ve got a good voice. You’re that country girl.”
Blige was not as amused. “I don’t get it,” she said.
In the end, the judges voted 3 to 1 to send Hardin on to Hollywood where she will join other contestants in the next round of competition, which will be aired on an upcoming episode of “American Idol” on Fox, Comcast channel 5.
Hardin released an album, “HEART,” at a launch party in downtown Rome in December.
