The United Way of Calhoun’s current motto is “Now more than ever.” United Way director, Vickie Spence said the organization needs assistants now, when more and more people are turning to local organizations for help meeting financial needs.

Spence said she is proud of the businesses in Gordon County that are 100 percent contributors, meaning each employee contributes to the United Way through payroll deductions.

“That kind of commitment is remarkable,” Spence said. “It means so much to us.”

Each employee of Starr-Mathews, an insurance agency in Calhoun, contributes to the United Way in the company’s pay roll deduction.

“We have been involved with the United Way since its inception in Calhoun,” said Cathy Mathews, corporate treasurer of Star-Mathews.

Mathews called the organization vital to the community.

“We have encouraged employees to give to their community through outreach and volunteering, the payroll deduction is just one way they contribute to the community,” she said. “It is simple and easy and it always makes you feel good to give.”

Spence says the money United Way collects from businesses goes directly back into the community, and payroll deductions add up quickly.

“Payroll deductions are the lifeblood of our organization,” Spence explains. “Even if someone is given as little as 50 cents or $1 or $2 per pay period, at the end of the year that has added up. Before you know it, you have given $104; someone might not be able to right a check of that amount all at once.”

Some companies offer their employees incentives for each employee to give.

“For each year we stay at 100 percent (donations) every employee is given an extra paid day off,” said Mark Molleson, vice president of operations at M&S Logistics in Calhoun.

Molleson said the M&S employees have been involved in the payroll program for the past three years.

“It is important for any corporation to also be citizens of the community,” said Molleson.

Spence says the payroll deductions are easy for a company to set up, maintain and track. According to Spence all a company has to do is create a code in their payroll system for United Way. Those funds will then be funneled into a separate account and a payment can later be mailed to United Way.

“Once the process start it is easy to roll along,” Spence said.

Molleson said M&S supports the United Way because the positive work the organization does in the community.

“The need for the United Way has never been greater,” Molleson said. “The need for organizations the United Way supports has never been greater. These organizations have been there for people in the best of times and in the worst of times. Even when the economy makes a full recovery, the United Way will still be needed to support the community.”
