The Greater Atlanta Chapter of the National Football Foundation and the Chick-fil-A Bowl recently recognized Sonoraville’s Greg Mulkey as Georgia’s top scholar-athlete of 2009.

““Greg has worked real hard academically and athletically all four of his years here at Sonoraville,” said SHS Head Football Coach Chuck King. “Greg has worked very hard in each sector of school life and this award is a great reward for his determination and will. We all are very proud of this accomplishment and we all know this is a great honor and I think well deserved.”

The award is based 40-percent on athletic accomplishments, 40-percent on academic accomplishments, and 20-percent on extracurricular.

“I am glad Greg has put himself in the position to receive accolades for both his athletic and academic work,” said King. “Greg is a great person and will carry the Sonoraville torch very well. We are very proud of him. “

Mulkey was announced last week at a commemorative breakfast and was presented as the winner as well at the Big Green Egg Scholarship Luncheon and Chalk Talk hosted by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution as part of the Chick-fil-A Bowl activities. Tennessee and Virginia Tech coaches and players were in attendance at the luncheon.

Mulkey received a $2,000 scholarship as the state’s top scholar-athlete. Dennis Caniglia, president of the Greater Atlanta Chapter, presented the award.

With 121 chapters and over 12,000 members nationwide, The National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame, a not-for-profit educational organization, runs programs designed to use the power of amateur football in developing scholarship, citizenship and athletic achievement in America’s young people.

The Chick-fil-A Bowl is the ninth-oldest bowl game in the country and hosts the longest-running rivalry series between the ACC and SEC. Now in its 42nd year, the Chick-fil-A Bowl has established itself as one of the nation’s elite bowl games with a string of 13 consecutive sellouts and has earned a reputation as one of the most competitive bowls in the nation.
