Mohawk closing Murray County tufting plant

Calhoun-based Mohawk Industries said it will permantly close its Eton tufting plant, a move that will eliminate 190 jobs.

Mohawk informed Murray County officials of the closure Wednesday.

Mohawk said its extrusion facility in Eton will continue to operate,

In a news release, Mohawk said workers were told Wednesday that the closure is "part of a consolidation strategy" and many positions will "be reassigned over the next 90 days."

Tufting equipment from Eton will be moved to another Mohawk facility in Dalton, the release said. Mohawk said it will offer jobs in Dalton to as many Eton employees as possible.

The region's unemployment rate is 12.7 percent according to the Georgia Department of Labor.
