Kessler remains unbeaten in Junior Winter Open

McClain Kessler, of Calhoun, is putting together a strong run at the Georgia State Junior Winter Open.

Competing in the boys’ 14-year-old division, Kessler posted a 7-6 (2), 6-3 win over Taylor Cobb on Monday morning to remain unbeaten and advance to the tournament’s semifinals. He will be in action this morning at 11 a.m. at Alto Park with hopes of securing a spot in the finals.

Also on Monday, Calhoun’s McCartney Kessler, competing in the girls’ 12-year-old division, suffered her first loss, falling to Samantha Hirshberg, 6-1, 6-0. The defeat puts Kessler into the consolation bracket, where she will return to action this morning at 9:30 a.m.

Calhoun’s Jake Briggs also suffered his first loss of the tourney Monday, and will play today at 9:30 a.m. in the consolation bracket.

Calhoun’s Kate Hutchinson and partner Candace Burke were defeated in doubles play by the No. 2-seeded team of Haley Adams and Morgan Winston.
