ATLANTA -- The Georgia Department of Transportation plans to suspend construction-related lane closures on all interstate highways and all major state routes for five days to help ease holiday traffic congestion.

The department says the construction suspension will begin at 5 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 23 and end at 5 a.m. Monday, Dec. 28.

Transportation Commissioner Vance Smith said he expects heavy holiday traffic in the Atlanta area beginning around noon on Wednesday, Dec. 23 and continuing through the weekend.
