When 8-year-old Marley Gentry set out to collect socks for children in Gordon County she didn’t realize what a success her endeavor would be.

“I thought socks are cheap and I thought that a couple of people could bring one or two pairs,” Marley said.

But instead of collecting the handful Marley had anticipated, she ended up with 549 pairs to give to children in need.

“For my first time (doing this) I thought, ‘that was awesome’,” Marley said.

Earlier in the fall Marley came up with the idea to collect the socks.

“I told some people, what if you were outside in the freezing cold and you did not have socks, what would you do?” Marley said.

“It all came from Marley, the whole idea,” said Marley’s mother, Mandy Gentry.

For days after Marley first came up with her plan to collect socks, Mandy frantically made phone calls to every business owner she knew, asking if they would donate a small portion of space in the front of their businesses to collect socks.

Marley and Mandy wrapped cardboard boxes to look like Christmas packages. These packages were used as sock drop of points. When the four weeks of collection rolled to a close Mandy was afraid Marley would be disappointed with the outcome.

“At first, when I looked at some of the boxes they didn’t seem very full, but when I counted the socks I knew, and I was so proud of Marley, I stood at my car as I counted and I cried,” said Mandy.

People from all over the community filled Marley’s boxes with socks, including the Tractor Supply store, Tot Roost, Pokey’s and DiPrima’s Shoes.

Marley and Mandy plan to continue “Marley’s Socks for Kids.”

“As long as Marley wants to do it,” Mandy said.

This past Monday Marley took the socks to Family Advocates of Gordon County.

“They were really happy. They were impressed with Marley and what she did,” Mandy said.
