The Gordon County school board recently has set the 2010 fiscal year millage rate at 15.266 mills.

During the Nov. 30 called meeting Superintendent Bill McCown said the schools will minimize spending due to the lowered millage rate.

“The board recognizes that it’s difficult times for the taxpayers,” McCown said. “And they have worked diligently to get our budget into position to roll back the millage rate.”

The millage rate will drop 2.234 mills from last year’s 17.50 mills.

The board has yet to specify which funding areas will be cut, and officials anticipate more state cuts. While money is still tight, the county has not said how the rollback rate will affect personnel or staff in the school system.

“We are concerned and at this time don’t know what the state will do with our funds,” Financial Director Gail Farriba said. “We are expecting to see additional (state) cuts next year.”

In other news, the board approved a general fund budget at a called board meeting on Nov. 30. The funds were divided up into three main areas; 63 percent is made up of state funds, 3 percent of federal allowance monies and 34 percent of local revenue.

The general fund will contain $51,520,467 in state funds, Farriba stated. The federal lottery will account for $80,570, 182; the lottery is based on the number of low-income children in the school system.

The amount of local revenues generated has yet to be determined.
