GC Animal Shelter in need
Stockings are stuffed, presents wrapped, and for animal lovers who want to spread an extra measure of cheer, there are opportunities available.
Sue Henson, Director of the Gordon County Animal Shelter, said that the shelter has a budget which covers food and necessities, but some items are always needed.
“Shampoo is a big one. It’s expensive, but when we get dogs in, they often have fleas,” she said.
Canned dog food is another item they need.
“We get some older dogs and cats in who need the softer food,” said Henson.
Other items are water and food bowls, blankets and towels.
This time of year, they do see an increase of incoming animals. One reason Henson said they have heard over the years are from those who have been thinking about it for a while and with holiday visitors, they fear allergies.
If someone is thinking of adopting a pet for a Christmas present, Henson recommend either doing it the week before or coming in after the holidays.
“Usually on Christmas, it’s hectic with people traveling and that can stress a new pet out,” she said. “You could print out a gift certificate to bring the to the animal shelter after Christmas and put it in there stocking instead.
Also, think about where you live before adopting. A hundred-pound dog will not do well in an apartment.
Henson said several rescue agencies have helped them out tremendously throughout the year by taking animals and finding foster homes for them until they can be adopted.
The Animal Rescue League of Northwest Georgia is one agency Henson credits with helping them. According to the league’s website, they are raffling off chances to win a handmade quilt. Chances are $5 for one, or three for $10. The drawing will be on Dec. 20.
Echota Pet Rescue, Sterile Ferral and Atlanta Pet Rescue also helps the animal shelter, said Henson. These agencies help find foster homes and keep animals that would otherwise be euthanized.
