Charges are pending against a man who attempted to drive around the lowered gates at a railroad crossing and was hit by an oncoming train.

Jerry Charles, 60, was treated and released from Floyd Medical Center in Rome following the 7 a.m. wreck at U.S. Hwy. 41 and Ga. 156.

According to initial reports from the Calhoun Police Department and Calhoun Fire Department:

Charles drove around the lowered gate and was struck by a southbound train. The truck was dragged several feet before hitting the railroad crossing post on the opposite side of initial impact and breaking the gate. Pieces of the truck were scattered along the side of the tracks and down the embankment.

Crews were working to repair the broken gate at 1:30 p.m. on Monday.
