Former Calhoun High School football standout Scott Blair led the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets to an ACC Championship on Saturday with a little help from Jonathan Dwyer at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Fla.

Blair connected on a on a tile game-record four field goals and Dwyer ran for two TD’s including the game winner to lead the No. 12 ranked Yellow Jackets to a 39-34 victory over No. 25 Clemson

Three of Blair’s field goals came from 40 or more yards out, something he has struggled with this season.

“It took a while for me to get over the 40-yard field goal hump, but once I made the first one it engrained a new confidence in myself and the first of the field goals came easiler,” said Blair. “It means a lot to finish the season on a high note.”

There is just something about Clemson that brings out the best in Blair. He also kicked three field goals, including a game winner, and threw for a touchdown against Clemson earlier in the season.

“I’m not sure what comes out of me against them, but I need to figure out how to replicate that against every other team,” said Blair. “I want to be a player that my team can count on, in any situation, against any team.”

Georgia Tech could certainly count on him last weekend.

Clemson (8-5) led off the scoring as C.J. Spiller found the end zone on a three yard run with 11:24 remaining in the first quarter. Richard Jackson connected on the point after.

Four minutes later, Blair hit his first field goal of the night, a 48-yard shot, to cut the Tigers lead to four.

The Yellow Jackets (11-2) took their first lead of the game near the start of the second quarter when Jonathan Dwyer took the ball in from four yards out. Blair’s PAT was good and Tech held a 10-7.

With 5:35 left in the quarter, Blair connected on his second field goal of the night, this time from 49-yards out. The kick increased the Yellow Jackets lead to six.

Clemson tied the game back up just a little less than three minutes remaining in the half. Spiller took the ball in from 41 yards out for his second TD on the night. The 2-point attempt was no good.

Just before the half, Blair hit his third field goal of the first half, this time a chip shot at 28-yards. The Kick gave Tech a 16-13 halftime lead.

The Yellow Jackets pulled away in the third quarter as Josh Nesbitt (13 yard run) and Demaryius Thomas (70-yard run) both found the end zone. Blair was successful on both PAT attempts.

Blair also connected on his fourth and final field goal of the night, a 40-yarder, with 1:11 left in the third quarter.

Clemson also added a touchdown in the third, a 36 yard run by Spiller. Tech held a 33-20 lead with a quarter to go.

In the final quarter Clemson added two touchdowns to take a one point lead. Spiller added his fourth touchdown of the night with a nine yard run and Andre Ellington scored from one yard out.

Dwyer scored his second TD of the night on a 15 yard run with 1:20 left on the clock to seal the win for Tech.

“We knew we were going to battle to be in a battle until the end, and it was huge for our defense to come up with the game winning stop,” said Blair. “We’ve put countless hours, sweat, and blood into making this happen and getting the opportunity to play in a BCS Bowl.”
