The city high school usually ranks near the top in the state while gc is closer to the bottom. No matter how you look at it the City schools provide a level of excellence that the country can only hope to match

I understand where everyone is coming from, there does need to be more balance. However, did you see all the positive coverage the GC theatre group got. And they came in second place, and there story came out before the competition which CHS won.

Yes, please do examine the stats for the City vs. County Schools...not just the few negative stories the Times sees fit to publish about the County, but really take a deep look at the data and everything that has happened within the schools the past two years. You will see they are not that far apart. Then consider the fact that the City keeps only the cream of the crop from County kids who wish to attend their schools and boots any County student who struggles the least bit to the curve, unless, of course they wear a football helmet. Then look at the "atmosphere," and take special note of the dilapidated buildings at CHS when you are considering that. I applaud a person who has pride in their school, but do not stick your head in the sand about the real issues. I can understand anyone having issues if their child was bullied in the school, but that occurs in every school setting to some degree. In fact, that is a primary reason my kids are in the County instead of the City. The real bottom line for me is that we need to be focusing on success for all students and forget about this City vs. County nonsense. A school is only as good as the individual experience. BTW...how did this discussion about the Times turn into a war between the schools?

I have nieces and nephews in the county school system, the bullying we all suffered through is still there and by certain teachers encouraged. You have teachers that were incompetant 30 years ago who are still incompetant now and teaching. If you choose to send your children to schools taht are substandard that is certainly your choice, but you should compare City school system statistics to county and see which has the better scores and atmosphere.

CommonSense....you do not speak on behalf of county students. I have three kids in the county system, and all receive a great education.

In regards to the Ashworth game-- Sonoraville won 3 out of 4 games played on Saturday. Don't really understand the headline.

CommonSense, or lack there of, it has been over 30 years since you were in school. How is your opinion of todays teachers at GC remotely valid? There are plenty of fine teachers at GC. The problem is students who lack the motivation to learn and better themselves.

First of all, Sonoraville beat Ashworth in the JV Girl's contest, the JV Boy's contest, and the Varsity Boy's contest. That's 3 out of 4, so I don't see why the headline is as it reads.

In regards to "commonsenseagitator;" if you are a product of city schools, and your post is a reflection of who you really are, then that says very little about city school education.

after going to red neck hell for all those years I would disagree with you.The county schools have some of teh worst teachers, GC especially, in history and they were carry overs from the days of Fairmont and red neck hell.

Common Sense is far from what seem to be dealing with. The county schools seem to be doing pretty well now that there are more than one county high school. As a former student of Gordon Central I think the level of education there was fine. The difference is in the money and focus on sports vs. education between the city and county school.

after suffering through 8 years of county schools in the 60's and 70's the best thing I can think of happening is that they close and Calhoun City take them over.

CRIM, while your premise is correct on city vs. county bias, it do not see how it holds water in this instance. These are both county teams, so although the headline is incorrect, it does not show the city/county bias. Keep pushing though...this is a worthwhile effort. I once kept statistics on sports headlines and articles for a year (I know, like I had nothing better to do), and it came out something like 80 % of headlines were about Calhoun and 70 % of articles were about Calhoun. When you get a chance, look up the readership numbers, though I think they have changed drastically in the past couple of years, with the disgruntled county readers dropping the paper.

Here's "ANOTHER" example of the calhoun times very biased reporting, when it comes to county school sports compared to the city schools. The head line says

Ashworth beats Sonoraville in local basketball showdown. when in fact the results were ashworth one win and sonoraville one win. can we please get a sports writer that can add 1 win and 1 loss each is not a defeat, "its a split"
