The annual Christmas candlelight tour at New Echota — Cherokee Capital State Historic Site in Calhoun will be Saturday, Dec. 5 from 6:30-9:30 p.m.

By the early 19th century many Cherokee had adopted the traditional Christmas celebrations still in practice today. Visitors will be able to tour the historic pathways of the town brightened by luminaries and enjoy the decorations inside the historic buildings. “Participating in this program has become an annual tradition for many north georgia families as they kick off the holiday season’, said site manager David Gomez.

Building decorations by park staff, volunteer groups and our new friends of New Echota historic site will provide visitors an opportunity to enjoy a quieter, simpler time as they step back to the 1830’s time period. Traditional Christmas carols will be heard across the historic grounds and warm refreshments will be served at Vann’s Tavern, an 1803 store and inn built by James Vann.

Other buildings decorated for the holidays will include the Cherokee middle-class farmstead cabin, Cherokee council house, supreme court house, Phoenix Printshop and the 1827 family home of missionary Samuel Worcester.

Admission fee for this special program will be $5 for adults and $3.50 for youth (6-17 years of age). Group discounts are not allowed for this special event. Visitors should dress for the weather, bring a flashlight or their lantern and be prepared for a three-quarters of a mile walk.
